Brief History of Okinawa Kenpo Kobudo Karate-Do Shudokan
The lineage of Okinawa Kenpo Kobudo Karate-Do is derived from both the Shurite and Nahate orthodox styles. It has been passed down from teacher to student since the mid 1700's.
Founder - Master Shigeru Nakamura (1893-1969). - He lived in Nago, Okinawa. - He first studied karate at the Icchu Middle School in Shuri. - His instructors included Kanryo Higashionna, Kentso Yabu, Chomo Hannashiro, Yastume Itosu, and Shinkichi Kunioshi.
1953 - First established Dojo in Nago City, Nakamura calls his art Okinawa Kenpo.
1955 - Okinawa Kenpo Renmei is formed by Shigeru Nakamura and zenryu Shimabuku. - Master Nakamura was well known for his use of Bogu Gear in full contact sparring.
1969 - Master Seikichi Odo (1926-2002). - Okinawa Kenpo Renmei appoints him as Master of Okinawa Kenpo Karate. - He is also made President of the All Okinawa Kenpo Karate-Do League. - He adds weapons to the Okinawa Kenpo System.
1970 - Master Seikichi Odo creates Okinawa Kenpo Karate Kobudo Federation.
1998 - Renames the Federation to Ryukyu Hon Kenpo Kobujitsu Federation.
1987 - Shihan Marcus Devalentino(1956-) earned his Black Belt in Okinawa Kenpo Karate. - Director of Devalentino Shudokan Schools International Martial Arts and Fitness. - Studied directly under Grandmaster Seikichi Odo, Grandmaster Rick Moneymaker, and several other Masters. - He has won numerous tournaments throughout the U.S. - Currently, he runs his Dojo out of Odenton, MD along with his wife Wanda (also a Black Belt instructor) and may someday return to their home in Hawaii.
1970 - Sensei Rich Pelletier started studying Martial Arts (1960-). 1990 - He studied karate under Shihan Marcus Devalentino and several other Senseis.
1995 - Sensei Pelletier opened the current location of Pelletier's Karate and has been teaching full time since.
